Solar Inverter Types for Indian Homes: Which Is Right for You?
Why Your Inverter Choice Matters
The inverter is the brain of your rooftop solar system. It converts the direct current (DC) generated by your solar panels into the 240V alternating current (AC) that powers your home. The type of inverter you choose determines whether you can store energy, how the system behaves during power cuts, and what your maintenance costs will be over the system’s 25-year life.
Panels get most of the attention — but the inverter often has the most significant impact on system reliability, output, and what you actually experience day-to-day.
The Four Inverter Types Used in Indian Homes
1. On-Grid String Inverter (Most Common)
An on-grid or grid-tied string inverter is the standard choice for residential solar in India. It converts solar panel output to AC power and feeds it directly into your home’s electrical supply, with surplus exported to the grid via net metering.
How it works:
- Your solar panels are wired in a “string” into the inverter
- The inverter tracks maximum power output and converts DC to AC
- During daylight hours, solar powers your home first; surplus goes to grid
- At night and on cloudy days, the grid supplies your home as normal
- Your DISCOM installs a bi-directional net meter to track import/export
Best for: Homes in cities and towns with reliable grid power, whose primary goal is reducing monthly electricity bills through net metering.
Limitation: If the grid goes down, the inverter shuts off automatically (a safety requirement). You will not have solar power during a grid outage, even in bright daylight. This is called anti-islanding protection — it protects grid workers from unexpected live circuits.
Approximate cost: ₹8,000–₹20,000 for residential sizes (1–5kW), depending on brand and capacity. This is included in most system quotes.
2. Hybrid Inverter (With Battery Support)
A hybrid inverter combines the function of a solar inverter and a battery inverter. It can export surplus power to the grid via net metering, and simultaneously charge a battery bank for use during power cuts or at night.
How it works:
- Solar charges battery bank first (to a set threshold), then powers home, then exports surplus
- During grid failure, the system switches to battery automatically — you keep the lights on
- When solar is unavailable and battery is depleted, grid resumes as backup
- The inverter manages all three sources (solar, battery, grid) intelligently
Best for: Homes in areas with frequent power cuts (load-shedding), or homeowners who want energy independence alongside bill savings.
Key tradeoff: Hybrid inverters cost ₹15,000–₹40,000 more than equivalent string inverters before adding the battery cost. Lithium battery banks for 2–4 hours of backup at a typical Indian home cost ₹40,000–₹1,20,000 depending on capacity. The financial case is stronger in areas with severe or long-duration outages.
Approximate total system cost (3kW with 2–4h backup): ₹2,50,000–₹4,00,000 before subsidy. The PM Surya Ghar subsidy applies to the solar component but typically not to the battery.
3. Off-Grid Inverter (No Grid Connection)
An off-grid solar system is a completely standalone power system with no grid connection. The inverter charges a battery bank using solar panels; all loads are powered from the battery.
Best for: Remote homes, agricultural pumps, and areas where grid connectivity is unavailable or prohibitively expensive to obtain.
Limitations for urban Indian homes: PM Surya Ghar subsidy requires a grid connection and net metering — off-grid systems are not eligible. Without net metering, you cannot earn credits for surplus solar. Off-grid systems are generally not recommended for urban residential use where grid connectivity exists.
4. Microinverters (Per-Panel Conversion)
A microinverter is a small inverter attached to each solar panel individually, rather than a single central inverter for the whole array.
Advantages:
- Each panel operates independently — shading or failure on one panel does not affect others
- Detailed per-panel monitoring
- Easier to expand the system panel by panel
Disadvantages:
- Higher upfront cost (each panel needs its own microinverter)
- More components on the roof mean more potential failure points
- Less common in India, so servicing and replacements are harder to find
Best for: Rooftops with significant partial shading from trees or structures, or complex roof layouts where a string cannot run uniformly. Not a standard choice for most straightforward Indian residential rooftops.
How to Choose the Right Inverter

Warranty: Minimum 5 years; premium brands offer 10 years. Some brands provide extended warranties for an additional cost. Confirm that warranty service is available in your city.
Brand support in India: Brands like Luminous, Growatt, and Sungrow have strong service networks in Indian cities. European brands (Fronius, SolarEdge) are excellent but service may be harder to find in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
Monitoring: Most modern inverters come with a monitoring app that shows real-time and historical generation data. This matters for troubleshooting and verifying your system is performing as expected.
DISCOM compatibility: Ensure the inverter is approved for grid export in your state. Most major brands are, but your empanelled installer should confirm.

Under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the subsidy applies to grid-connected rooftop solar systems installed by DISCOM-empanelled installers. Both on-grid string inverters and hybrid inverters qualify — but only the solar component of a hybrid system typically receives the subsidy, not the battery bank.
