On-Grid vs Off-Grid Solar: Which Is Right for You?
The Core Difference
On-grid solar (also called grid-tied solar) connects your solar system directly to the public electricity grid. When your panels generate power, it flows first to your home’s loads; any surplus is exported to the grid, and any shortfall is imported from the grid. There are no batteries.
Off-grid solar is completely independent of the public electricity grid. All electricity must come from your panels and battery bank. There is no grid backup — if your batteries run out and the sun isn’t shining, you have no power.
Hybrid solar is a middle ground: grid-connected with battery storage. It provides backup power during grid outages while still enabling net metering and grid interaction.
On-Grid Solar: The Right Choice for Most Indian Homeowners
For the vast majority of urban and semi-urban Indian households with a functioning grid connection, on-grid is the practical and financially smart choice.

Off-Grid Solar: For Remote or Unreliable Grid Locations
Off-grid solar is designed for locations where the grid is unavailable, unreliable, or connection is impractical (remote villages, farmhouses, hill stations, remote commercial sites).
Advantages:
- Completely independent of the grid
- Power available even when the grid is down or absent
- No electricity bill from the utility

Hybrid Solar: Backup Power Without Going Full Off-Grid
Hybrid systems are increasingly popular in cities with frequent power cuts. They give you the best of both worlds: net metering credit during normal operation and battery backup during outages.
Advantages:
- Grid-connected with battery backup
- Net metering still available (with caveats — check your DISCOM’s rules on hybrid systems)
- Smaller battery bank needed compared to full off-grid (grid is the backstop)
- Can be sized for only the critical loads during outages (smaller, cheaper battery)
Limitations:
- Higher cost than pure on-grid (battery + compatible hybrid inverter)
- Battery replacement cost still applies every 5–10 years
- Regulatory clarity on hybrid + net metering varies by DISCOM
Suitable for: Urban homes in areas with daily grid outages of 2–6 hours, where backup power for essential loads (fans, lights, fridge) is a priority.
